Welcome to the next story here at Erstwhile! All Fur is one of many translations of the title of this Grimm tale. The original German name is Allerleirauh, which has been translated as “All-Kinds-of-Fur”, or “Thousandfurs”. There are other similar versions of this story, including Donkeyskin, Catskin, and Cap O’ Rushes.
Elle Skinner is illustrating this tale and she does a lovely job of it! We all hope you enjoy this next Erstwhile tale.

I love this story. ^.^
So excited for this one!!! And Snow White and Rose Red!!!
!!! Oh my gosh! This is one of my favourites!! I’m so excited! :D :D :D
WOOOOO!! I recognize it as Cap O Rushes. But I’ve only seen the animated tale. (It was an anime version with a super cheesy intro) I’m probably in for the ride of my life. o_o
The beginnings are definitely distinct
I first saw this as the animated version that Ms. Williams brought up and this is by far one of my favorite fairy tells. It help gave me ideas for my own stories.
Yay! This is my favorite! :]
Yes! I love this story!
Oh hey, I got this one as a digital purchase. Figured it was coming up at some point. I always liked it as a kid. Well, I shan’t spoil.
Oh! Ohhh, I think I remember this one from when I was a kid!
(Squee of delight)
love it that you have not even taken a break between stories! more people should be reading this – are you not listing erstwhiletales on TWC?
YES! This is one of my favourites, right after The Twelve Dancing Princesses. Mind you, I grew up on a Disneyfied version of that one, and when I read the original, I was rather distressed to read the original ending, so maybe Allerleirauh is actually my favourite now… either way, great choice!!
the original ending of which one? twelve dancing princesses or all fur?
and what was so bad about the original ending?
I love the Thousandfurs story! I can’t wait to see your artwork on it! <3
OH MY GOODDDDD THIS IS MY FAVORITE ;D
I love this one! It’s a great story!
I wish you would also do “The White Bride and the Black One”, which is my favourite.
Oh man, this was one of my favorite ones growing up. I had a beautifully illustrated one and I would just stare at the pictures of the dresses thinking how much I wanted them XD
I own this, it’s my all time favorite fairy tale since age 6! :)
I love this story. It always amazed me how she pulled everything off and on so quickly.
One of my favorites as well; very excited for this :D
On a side note– has anyone else been experiencing technical difficulties while navigating the pages? I keep getting stuck at one page and it won’t show there’s a new page (ie, the next & latest buttons aren’t refreshing).
Oh, I like this one! And yet, I don’t… the beginning is very, very disturbing and a bit squicky. And in some version the prince is a downright jerk who abuses poor All Kinds of Fur! I haven’t read the Grimms version, but I look forward to it.
Soooo excited for this one! Love it, love it. There is another version (which is no less umm… dark than this one) by Robin McKinley called Deerskin. Can’t wait to read the pages!
I’ve read Deerskin. Haven’t read the one by Lackey yet (Unnatural Issue) so don’t know how closely it follows the tale. I love Robin McKinley’s books.
The only Robin McKinley book I read was her Sleeping Beauty version, Spindle’s End. I wasn’t a big fan of the ending, even though it made sense.
…I hope this is the one I’m thinking it is. I’ve adored this story (and many of its variations) since I was a child. I must say I am VERY excited.
-flails- Omigosh, I LOVE this story~! So much, massively excited~. C:
Ummm…. This has one of the ickiest beginnings I’ve ever heard of. There’s a few books using this as a basis. I will say, though, that ANY father who wants to do that to his own daughter deserves worse than happens to anyone in any Grimm fairytale I’ve ever heard of.
Lovely cover. I look forward to reading this. =)
Looking forward to seeing Elle’s artwork again in a different context. Also glad you guys are picking stories I’ve never heard of!
Never heard of this one. I’m excited!
I have never read this story, heard of it, but never read. I wonder how it will turn….
All fur one and one f’r all!
OH……..MY………GOOOOODDD!!!!
I LIKE THIS ONE EVEN MORE THAN MAID MALEEN!
How do you guys always know exactly what I like!?
PRINCESS FURBALL!!!!!!!
No squee!
I already have enough daddy issues without adding THAT family’s issues to mine…
Ah, well, poor girl.
my high school did a play called The Secret in the Wings, which was basically a collection of Grimm tales and this was one of them. while I wasn’t in this particular tale, it was very enjoyable and the show was one of my favorites :3
Oh lawdy, I’ve been looking for this story for AGES. I grew up reading a kid’s version of it called “Princess Furball,” and I’ve been trying to get a copy of it but with little to no success. This is great because now I can read it any time, AND in the (relatively) original context!
Thank you, THANK YOU for putting this one up!
YES!!!! This is my favorite faerie tale. You guys rock. Am sad that I am almost all caught up with the archives. Looking forward to seeing how you guys illustrate this one.
I love this story. Did you know that it has a “real life” start? It mirrors the Catholic myth of Saint Dympha, but that ends in bloodshed.
I really adore this story.
I look forward to seeing what you do with it!
Very energetic blog, I loved that bit. Will there be a part
2?
I don’t know if it’s just me or if perhaps everyone else experiencing problems with
