Am I the only one who finds third panel (prince throwing away fur coat and seeing princess) Both Adorable and Adorklabe? and hilarious?
I think of all the versions I Read of Spasorrow/Allfur/Deer skin, etc this one is the NICEST prince
I hear a theatrical WHOOPH! noise in my head when he whips away that heavy fur coat. XD
ok now in the next page he sends her to the dungeons for deceiving the king. lol
Is it weird that I find this tale the sweetest of all when it started with a guy wanting to marry his own daughter?
Yes. Very weird.
In the first version I ever encountered of this story was Robin McKinley’s Deerskin and in it the king actually rapes his daughter and the trauma of it causes her to change physically instead of having a fur suit. It was a harsh but powerful story.
Love McKinley. I’ve only read her retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I’ll have to look for Deerskin.
Just the opposite for me however. The first version of this story I encountered was Sapsorrow from the storyteller, which was on the complete other side of the spectrum. It was law that whoever could wear this ring, the King had to marry. His selfish bad daughters tried to wear it, but our princess accidently puts it on. The king doesn’t want to marry her, but it is the law.
What’s the last panel supposed to be? Also, AWWW~
He gave her a rag so she can clean herself up.
Oh…. that makes sense now.
Someone looks happy! This is so sweet!!! That head servant obviously recognizes what’s happening too.
Eee! At last! :D
What game is she actually playing? The golden trinkets in the soup are supposed to give her away, but she is trying to conceal her identity other than that. If the king had not played the tricks with the ring and the never-ending dance, she’d keep serving in the kitchen.
Is this supposed to be a “no means yes” story?
I think she just wanted to be 100% sure he was for real and not wanting just a fling with her as she’s in an awfully vulnerable position. :)
I think it’s a bit more innocent. I think she has a crush on him and is leaving him gifts much like a secret admirer might. :)
Seems he found out, and so the conclusion of the story, I wonder what ever happened to the girl’s father?
He realised his folly as soon his daughter ran away.
But the loss of his daughter only compounded the grief he felt, at the loss of his wife, which had clearly sent him mad.
He died a broken man, fruitlessly sending scouts and emissaries to all the wrong places searching for his daughter to beg her forgiveness.

In Perault’s “Donkeyskin” the king actually shows up at her wedding and is forgiven for his attempted sin. In most of these stories though, the father is usually never heard from again.

Not only for this one but a whole bunch of this type.
Squeee! That’s so adorable!
If you like Robin, you really need to read the Once Upon a Time is Timeless series. It’s by multiple authors and are among my favorite series of all time.
They’re all so happy! Squee!
I like how the maid bows to her.
You know I think, if remember, one was a shape of a ring the other was a wheel so my guess is
One: the ring must symbolize her father’s engagement ring. ( which was when she wanted to run away from home) :)
Two: the wheel was when she traveled with her future prince. ^_^
Third: didn’t really see it clear enough… -_-
Aww! Everybody is so happy!!!
I’m still a little curious as to why she tried to run away, though…
Didn’t she *want* him to find her?
Maybe thought she’d be in major trouble? Maybe didn’t want him to see her all sooted up like that.
She thought he was angry at her. Notice how she looks a little confused in panel three when she sees that he’s happy? Then she looks happy/blushy in panel four, because she understands that he’s /not/ mad.
It is so cute! I love it!
I can imagine the chef thinking to herself, “Oh crap. I’m in for it now.”
And here I was hoping he’d assume Allfur had eaten the girl and have it executed. >=D
