Welcome to our newest fairytale adaptation, Snow White and Rose Red, by Gina Biggs. This is NOT “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” or a new adventure for that fairytale princess. The Snow White from this tale is a completely different character, so sit back and enjoy a tale of a Snow White you might not know yet!

EEEEEEPPP!!! I love this cover! Happy that Snow White is a blonde in this version. In one version I read she does have dark hair and Rose Red was more of a sandy blonde hehe. Also glad here they’re depicted as teens because in the tale I had the understanding that they were still kids *like 12 or 13*.
Also, I hope Gina gets better soon.
Gotta say I’m really excited for this one. I’ve heard of it, but never actually read it. Everyone knows about the OTHER Snow White (thanks to Disney), so I can’t wait to finally see what this one is about.
And Gina is drawing it! Not that I dislike the other two artists, but I’ve been a Red String fan for years! (and, like Eiji, I’m a guy who’s not ashamed to admit that he likes shojo manga…)
Frickin sweet! I love this tale.
My all time favorite Grimm Tale. I’ve heard it, read it, seen it in so many different versions, I’m very curious to see what Gina makes out of it…
Also I agree with LazerWulf, very excited, that Gina is illustrating this!
They look so pretty together. :)
One of my favourite fairy tales!
Thank you for doing this! <3
My money is on the bear.
in the original story, snow white is “white as snow and as red as blood, and as black-haired as ebony wood”. i look forward to reading this, but am bummed to see a blonde snow white. as a little girl in the 70s, she was the only disney princess that i could relate to!
This is a different Snow White, though. In fact, I believe the names in “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and “Snow White and Rose Red” are actually different in German but translate out the same in English, though.
Yeah, that’s why a number of translations call it “Snowdrop and the Seven Dwarfs”.
Snow White and the Dwarves is a more polite, high class name while Snow White and Rose Red is a bit more slangy, seeing as one was born a princess and one was born a peasant girl. At least that’s how I understand it, but there’s not really an easy way to say that in English.
Snow White (the one who gets poisoned) is Schneewittchen.
Snow White (Rose Red’s Sister) is Schneeweissen.
Is that want you meant Nanenna?
Ah yes, thank you! I couldn’t remember them in German, I haven’t taken any. If it were Spanish or Japanese I could have been more in depth.
Schneewitchen: Snow White / Snowwhite;
Schneeweißchen/Schneeweisschen: Snow-White.
I have to confess the same feeling BUT as this is likely a different story, perhaps we can be forgiving?
“Snow White & Rose Red” is a completely different/unrelated story from “Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs”. The Snow White in this story is a different character. ^_^
mea culpa. carry on.
Yeah, two very different stories, just with the same name in English. This is one of my favorite fairy tales :) So many foreshadowing elements in this cover, well done Gina!
I love this story, so glad it’s finally going to be drawn! <3
This is my favorite fairy tale of all time! So glad y’all decided to take this one on!
Thank you so much for drawing this story! It’s my favorite fairy tale!!
Oh my gosh–this looks so awesome.
Oh will you do the 12 dancing princesses. That’s my favorite :) and it always reminds me of this story. They are both wonderful and don’t have sad endings, at least the versions I’ve read.
The Cover is beautiful
Are they fraternal twins
I don’t think it is ever mentioned if their twins or not, they’re just sisters.
Oh, the prince is right there on the cover! Not sure how I feel about that, but I do love the missing poster you have there. It adds a very nice touch. I also love the sisters’ design, it’s great you made this Snow White look different than the princess. I am also glad they’re a little older hear, young enough to still be looked at as children but not so young it gets uncomfortable for modern readers ***omitted for spoilers***.
Wait a minute *squint* The guy in the poster… oh! I’ll shut up now.
Holy cow, this cover is so EPIC! I know this story by heart because it’s a personal favorite, so just looking at that design and spotting all the clever references to how the fairy tale plays out…amazing! But it’s just coy enough to not give anything away to the folks that might not be familiar with it.
I think this is my favorite Erstwhile cover :) And I was already psyched to know this story was in the pipeline as it is!
This will be the first time I read this story. I only heard about it a couple years ago.
Looking forward to this :)
You know, I never bothered to read this because I always thought it was some sequel to “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” – I’m glad in a way as it gives me something ELSE to watch that I’ve never seen before :)
And Gina, may your morning sickness diminish and no longer bother you.
“And Gina, may your morning sickness diminish and no longer bother you.”
*Squee!* I hope it’s not really a sickness, and that it may bother you your life long! My wife’s morning sicknesses now bother me every day. I haven’t slept thoroughly since, but it’s okay. :)
Woo! Rose Red is one of my favorite characters from Fables, so while I don’t care for this original fairy tale as much as some other ones, I’m happy to see it. :)
German title : Schneeweisschen und Rosenrot.
English title: Snow-White and Rose-Red.
We always had two bushes (height: 2.5 m) of the same plant in our garden, with a slight variety: one flowered white and had white berries, the other flowered red and had (light) red berries.
We called them “Schneeweisschen” and “Rosenrot”, although the red was far from the deep red a rose can have.
Alas, they died shortly before I bought the house of my parents, so I am looking for something to replant the combination. And I don’t want to do it with roses.
I just remembered: I’ve once read an older version which was named
“The ungrateful *SPOILER ALERT*”
Ungrateful *angry looking man with white hair and bright red eyes on the poster*?
This story takes me back :3
I loved this story as a kid! I can’t wait to read this!
Just getting back from a vacation and so excited to see this! One of my very favorite fairy tales. There is a novel by Patricia C. Wrede based on the fairy tale that was one of my favorite books as a teen. Wrede made it into a historical fantasy during Elizabethan times. Thrilled to see the tale in graphic novel format!
And the usual cascade of everyone saying this is their favourite (like they do about every non-omnicidal story), followed by Grimm-snobbery.
We’re off to a lovely start again. ¬_¬
Let me be the first to note I wasn’t familiar with ANY of these stories prior to coming here… and am only here because I like webcomics.
I am starting to tire of webcomics with comment features though. The rote butt-kissing that adorns almost every page of every webcomic these days wears more than a little thin. It should be sufficient show of approval to merely nod quietly and not instantly resort to criticism.
And if one must start a pun thread (they always happen sooner or later), please PLEASE get more than three out before resorting to repetition (or someone referring to “punishment”). One never gets to see more than the most mediocre of word-play these days.
So, to sum up… I like the comic, but the fandom grates a tad.
…
And yes, I am being somewhat facetious. Deliberately.
I’m far too jaded to be entirely sincere (or, for that matter, entirely insincere) about anything any more.
Read this one as a kid, looking forward to see if this version matches up with the (fading) memory
