They often ran about the forest alone and gathered red berries, and no beasts did them any harm, but came close to them trustfully. The little hare would eat a cabbage-leaf out of their hands, the roe grazed by their side, the stag leapt merrily by them, and the birds sat still upon the boughs, and sang whatever they knew.

No mishap overtook them; if they had stayed too late in the forest and night came on, they laid themselves down near one another upon the moss, and slept until morning came, and their mother knew this and had not distress on their account.

I’m sorry, but I can’t help it. The idea of roe grazing is just refusing to let go of my brain. I’m thinking you maybe meant doe.

I think the text was probably referring to a roe deer, so it’s both.

I believe the roe deer is in fact the type of deer most commonly found in the forests of Germany. Little known factoid: Bambi was originally meant to be a roe deer because the original author of the book Felix Salten was German. Disney animation Americanized it to a white-tailed deer for the sake of their primary audience.

Is Rosie getting Lyme disease a major plot point?

The forest seems so peaceful and safe for those little girls. It’s like its their backyard. :)

This story is perhaps the most hyperbolic endorsement ever of the buddy system.

I hope it’s a very warm summer night – I can’t help thinking their poor little feet must be so cold.

This is routine for them (thank you, ShinyHappyGoth), so I would not expect them (or their feet) to be cold… unless the plot requires it, in which case the night will probably be unexpectedly cool. After all, they know the forest and the weather, so if they thought they might get cold they would be cuddled up next to the deer.
